Nobuo Sekine’s Phase—Mother Earth, made for the 1968 Contemporary Sculpture Exhibition in Kobe, is frequently identified as a catalytic work for Mono-ha. By excavating a cylindrical volume of earth and placing the displaced soil beside the hole, he made transformation, material and site inseparable.
