Akihiro Maeta is designated a Living National Treasure of Japan for his consummate mastery of unglazed white porcelain (hakuji). Rejecting the potter's wheel, he carves and shapes porcelain clay by hand using wooden tools, creating pure, faceted surfaces whose soft matte skin interacts subtly with natural light.
