Hilma af Klint developed large-scale abstract paintings years before nonobjective art became widely established in European modernism. A member of the spiritualist group The Five, she produced The Paintings for the Temple through a complex system of symbols, diagrams, color and serial groups. Much of the work was withheld from public view during her lifetime.
